We’ve talked on the blog before about GMOs (genetically modified organisms) but we haven’t really gotten into the nitty gritty of a GMO and why they’re bad for us.
So let’s talk GMOs: What is a GMO? In a nutshell a GMO is an organism (fish, food, etc) whose material has been genetically altered. For food, there are two types of GMOs, both of which are patent protected (yes, patent protecting FOOD, if you can believe it). One is resistant to commercial herbicides and the other is able to product “pesticidal proteins” from within the plant (doesn’t that sound delicious and nutritious?)
The best and easiest visual reference I can find to do a quick overview of a GMO is here.
Besides the fact that GMOs have not been proven to be safe (and they haven’t been around long enough for us to really know long term cosequences of ingesting them)- they provide severe consequences for our freedoms and food supply.
An example: Monsanto (and if you want to learn more about the evils of this massive company- head over here) sells these seeds to farmers. These seeds cross pollinate from field to field (as plants often do). If Monsanto finds a crop in a neighboring farm- through no fault of either farmer- they are suing the non planting farmer even though he didn’t purchase or plant the crop in his farm.
Some studies suggest that consumption of GMOs will cause us to be resistant to antibiotics. Some suggest they cause slow neurological damage. Some suggest that it will cause new allergens to be introduced into our foods. Whatever your belief is, there is no research that says these foods are 100% safe for you.
If you’re wanting to purchase REAL food and avoid these lab produced foods, then check out this website for brands that are Non GMO certified.
